001   : JOYCE MALDONADO IS BORN ON THE FOURTH OF FEBRUARY 1942, IN HAWKINS, INDIANA, TO LOUIS AND EVELYN MALDONADO ( NEÉ GREENE ). an only child, joyce grows up on the outskirts of town in a small two - bedroom house, single - floored and boasting little more than a small wraparound porch. their family is a modest one, and the first few years of joyce’s life are unremarkable, if not studded with poverty and hardship. evelyn is a quiet, yet supportive stay at home mother, while her father, a weathered engineer, is the epitome of stoic, yet understatedly loving man. though war breaks out before joyce is born, louis is exempted from being drafted into the front lines on account of a longstanding injury, but ensures that he contributes to the war effort by taking up work at a munitions plant close to indianapolis. the maldonados relocate, and JOYCE IS THREE YEARS OLD WHEN THE WAR ENDS AND THE FAMILY MOVES BACK TO HAWKINS.louis nails down a secure job at a local mechanics workshop in THE LATE 1940’S, and throughout the years, joyce grows up learning what hard work looks like: the late nights, the thin paychecks, and the exhaustion and lack of family time that all seemed to come with that sacrifice. still, her weekdays are taken up with school, where she develops an interest in creative writing, skips the occasional math class, and learns to sneak cigarettes between classes under the steps with JAMES HOPPER JR. she fills her weekends with the odd shift at melvald’s diner, and balmy afternoon drives down to sattler’s quarry with friends.IT’S LATE 1959 WHEN JOYCE FIRST MEETS LONNIE BYERS. she’s still a senior at hawkins high, and he’s three years older. they don’t date, initially, but lonnie asks her out in 1960, just weeks after her graduation. her father doesn’t approve, clinging to the notion that lonnie’s a burnout, and a draft - dodger, and would never be able to provide for his daughter, but joyce rebels. their relationship burns fast and explosive from the start, and is short - lived. later that year, joyce’s aunt darlene is committed to a mental facility, and her mother suffers a catastrophic stroke that she never quite recovers from. to help make ends meet at home, joyce goes back to melvald’s, bussing tables and working double shifts every other week. she so badly wants out of town, but there are financial constraints to consider, and her mother’s ailing health and the impact of the vietnam war all seem to conspire against her far flung aspirations.

BY 1962, THE ALREADY UNLIKELY FANTASY OF COLLEGE IS A DISTANT AND UNATTAINABLE DAYDREAM FOR JOYCE, and she and lonnie start seriously dating again. their relationship oscillates between steady and not, and within months he gets a job at the nearby scrapyard, and things settle into a state of what feels like relatively domestic stability. IT’S 1963 WHEN LONNIE PROPOSES THE FIRST TIME, on the walk home from a movie, with the news that there’s a house on the market near the harringtons’ place. it’s secluded and a little beaten - up, and it’s a longer drive into the center of town, but it’s big enough for a couple, a dog or two. even kids. joyce doesn’t agree right away, citing her mom’s declining health, and her dad’s drinking, but he asks again a month later and she accepts. JOYCE AND LONNIE MARRY THE YEAR AFTER. it’s a small ceremony at the downtown courthouse, attended by a meager gathering of family, and joyce’s father gives her away.002   : tbd
